Chromecast is a Google’s latest media device, released worldwide on February 3, 2014. It is HDMI dongle type product which is basically like Roku and Apple TV or even Google TV. It allows you to stream from your Tablet, iPhone, laptop to your television specifically Netflix or Youtube. You can even cast your chrome browser directly to the HDTV and that way you can get access to other absent media sources such as Hulu that are not currently supported through other apps. Now coming back to our topic:

Which is how to chromecast xbmc in a most easy way. Well we have two methods here to chromecast with kodi, one is simple but battery consuming way and the other one is little bit long(about 7 steps) but this will not consume so much battery. Choice is yours.

Note that:

We are using android device to stream kodi content and streaming kodi with chromecast from iOS device is not supported.

How to chromecast with kodi

The simple way

  1. Open chromecast app on your Android phone. Now open the menu and select the “Cast screen/audio”. Follow the instructions for connecting to chromecast.
  2. Open Kodi. Find and play the video you want to watch.
  3. It will now start playing on both devices, the battery consuming thing here is that you can’t turn off the screen or attend calls etc.
    The long way

The long way

  1. Download kodiEs file explorerlocalcast and playerfactorycore.
  2. Open Es file explorer and navigate to it’s settings then display settings. Make sure that “show hidden files” is selected there.
  3. Now also make sure that kodi(formerly XBMC) media center is connected to kodi app.
  4. Now navigate to the folder where you downloaded playerfactorycore.xml file and copy it.
  5. Go to Android > Data > org.xbmc.kodi > Files > .kodi > here look for userdata folder. Now paste the playerfactorycore.xml file in this folder.
  6. Now, open kodi and search for the video which you want to play. It will now automatically launch the localcast app. If it asks to choose from chromecast and localcast, simply select localcast.
  7. Once it completes loading, it will asks you to play and choose the device to stream.
Now again it will prompt you to play and finally, your video will start playing on tv connected with chromecast.

If you’re having any difficulty in executing above steps, just follow this video guide by raybansandfedora @ youtube.

If the above two are somehow not working for you then simply use Yatse(free kodi third party remote) or  cast4kodi(5$) to stream kodi to chromecast from android.

Use Kodi TV as Chromecast:

What if you want to achieve a polar opposite of the above mentioned tutorial. Here you can find a complete guide on how you can play any link on your KODI TV from your smartphone. In other words, here is the method of turning your Kodi TV into a Chromecast.

Android has a lot more option as compared to iOS and that is why I would recommend you to use an Android phone to Chromecast to Kodi tv.

  1. First of all you will need to open Settings of your Kodi TV and go to System > Services. Here you will need to enable Remote control.
  2. After that, go to the Settings > System Info and note down IP address of your Kodi TV.
  3. Next, install Kore Kodi Remote app on your smartphone. I have provided Google PlayStore link below.Use Kodi as Chromecast
  4. After the app is installed, open it up and it will automatically scan for your Kodi TV on the network and show you the same.
  5. Connect to the Kodi TV from the remote app and now minimize the Kore app using the home button.
  6. Now open any video link, wether it be in the YouTube app or in Google Chrome on your phone and press the Share option.
  7. You will see a bunch of options, I want you to select the “Play on Kodi” option. This will push the link to the TV and now you can even turn off your smartphone wifi and the video will still continue to play. Just like in a Chromecast.

So what you’re waiting for?

Once you set this up (which I was able to do with method 2 thanks to your great guide) how do I watch a video on Kodi on my phone without Local cast kicking in and wanting to send to my Chromecast?

    1. An easy workaround for that would be renaming the playerfactorycore.xml file to something like playerfactorycore.xml1
Doing this will hide the file from kodi and it will play the video normally.
When needed you can rename it back and it should be working as it should.

      1. I use a toggle widget app called ‘Kodi Cast Toggle’ from the play store. Just tapping the app icon toggles whether Kodi content plays on the device or on chromecast (no renaming or deleting xml files necessary). It also lets you set up playing content through a 3rd party media player like MX Player instead of the default Kodi player. Super useful!

    2. What I do is go to the local cast app, go to settings then beta features and check play on device. When you use kodi it won’t send to chrome cast until you uncheck it

  2. Having a hard time finding finding the player factory core.XML one on android what does the app look like

    1. Hi Garret, Thanks for reading our post and asking the question.
Playerfactorycore.xml is a file, not an app. You have to download and put it inside the directory mentioned inside the post.
In case if you have downloaded the file on your android device then you will be able to locate it in downloads folder inside your sdcard.

  3. Love the post but I followed it step by and and when I open kodi local cast doesn’t open it just continues to play on my phone what do I do?

    1. Hi Chris,
Thanks for commenting. The problem you are having is wierd. Just make sure that you paste the file in the exact folder and the filename is right.
Also make sure that localcast is running in the background. Sometimes it might be unable to launch if it is not in RAM.
